The design

Zilwaukee sits in Saginaw County and got its name from a piece of nineteenth-century marketing. The story goes that the founders, looking for German immigrant labour in the 1840s, picked a name close enough to Milwaukee that arrivals might turn up by mistake. Most Michiganders today know it for the Zilwaukee Bridge on I-75, a 1980s construction project that became a byword for delays. Either way it is a name that carries a story, which is the whole point of putting it on a mug.

Questions about this mug

Is the Zilwaukee naming story true? It is the long-standing local account of how the village got its name in the 1840s, repeated in Michigan histories and by the community itself. Like most nineteenth-century founding stories it is hard to document to the letter, which is part of its charm.

Is it dishwasher safe? Yes, dishwasher and microwave safe. The print is fired into the coating rather than applied on top, so it will not peel at the edges. Top rack and a normal cycle will give it the longest life.
